WiderListen.ing is a searchable bank of musical concepts linked to real recordings with exact timecodes — search for a concept, category, artist, or genre, or explore the Spotlight for a few random examples to get started.
Finding an example
- Type into the search bar to match a song title, artist, concept name, genre, or the listening focus text.
- Pick a category from the dropdown to narrow to one syllabus parameter (Melody, Harmony, Rhythm, and so on).
- Once a category is selected, use the pills below it to filter down to one specific concept, or stay on "All [Category] Elements" to see the whole set.
- Reset Filters clears everything and returns to the Spotlight.
Using a result
- Click the category/concept badge on a card to open its glossary definition.
- Click the share icon to copy a direct link to that exact clip and timestamp — useful for sharing with a class or dropping into a slide.
- Click Launch Clip to open the recording on YouTube, cued to the timestamp.
- No search or filter applied? The Spotlight shows three random examples — hit Shuffle for three more.
Blocking ads
- Install an ad blocker such as Adblock Plus to speed up finding and cueing examples — it skips YouTube's pre-roll/paused ads while you're locating a clip.
- Quick install: open your browser's Settings, find the Extensions (or Add-ons) section, search for "Adblock Plus", and click Add/Install.
- Worth doing for teachers regardless of the time-saving: YouTube ads can be personalised based on browsing history and may show something unrelated or inappropriate mid-lesson — blocking them removes that risk in the classroom.
